Zixin Jiao, When Paths Overlap

When Paths Overlap is an interactive split-screen walking game exploring memory, kinship absence, and the quiet agency of objects.

After an exhausting day, a young woman accidentally arrives at a park she once visited with her father as a child. As she moves through the space, familiar objects begin to draw forgotten moments back into the present. Across two parallel screens, past and present unfold simultaneously, allowing different temporal layers to slowly drift into one another.

Grounded in autoethnographic research shaped by the artist's own experience of loss, the work reflects on how objects and spaces continue to hold emotional traces after someone is gone. Rather than remaining passive containers of memory, these objects begin to quietly guide the return of the past.

The question at the heart of the game is: after loss, who — or what — is still remembering?
