PlayPass is a prototype NFT collection designed to explore how sports-related digital tokens can function as participatory media artefacts rather than speculative assets. The project consists of three tiered NFTs — Base, Limited, and Exclusive — each operating as a digital access key that unlocks exclusive media content, community access, and sport-specific participation experiences for holders. Built on the Polygon blockchain and hosted via OpenSea, the collection uses token-gating to link digital ownership directly to cultural engagement, drawing on participatory culture theory, interactive media design, and critical political economy to challenge dominant narratives around NFT value.
James Edmonds is a final year BA Media student at UCL whose practice spans digital media production, blockchain culture, and sports media. His final project investigates NFTs as interactive media forms, combining practice-based research with theoretical frameworks drawn from participatory culture, digital ownership, and fan engagement. Alongside his academic work, James has production experience at Wash (London) and Blue Olive Productions (Isle of Man), working across VFX, videography, and content creation.
