Tingxue Du, Patient 0527

immersive installation

This installation art immerses us in the intense plight of a patient suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, drawn mainly from my personal experience. The installation consists of a bathtub filled with bloody water and an experimental film documenting the emotional journey of the patient. The film’s color themes change from yellow, to blue and finally ends in red, contributing to the entire visual storytelling of the film and reflecting the gradual deterioration and spiraling of emotions when dealing with mental illness. Each color in the film symbolizes a distinct emotion and mental state: yellow represents happiness and contentment, blue signifies depression, and red embodies rage. At the film's conclusion, a vivid red screen, reminiscent of blood, underscores the tragic reality faced by many who struggle with self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Complementing this, the bathtub filled with crimson water poignantly symbolizes the weight of these painful choices. This artefact invites viewers to consider the harsh realities of those who struggle with their mental health via a strong visual experience. The immersive setting invites deep reflection on feelings of alienation, hopelessness, and a desire for empathy.
