‘BULL’ is an experimental anthology that mashes techniques associated with ‘culture-jamming’ and the disorientating logicof dreams. The three non-narrative films make use of the same audio that multi-million-dollar companies have blasted overtelevision, radio, and social media for the past decade. By embracing ‘defamiliarization,’ these short non-narrative filmsattempt to break this web of force-fed associations and deconstruct our automated response.“The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls” (Paul Simon),and the prophets want you to buy anti-frost refrigerators, airline tickets, and dish soap.Built upon defamiliarization and cognitive film theory, ‘BULL’ makes use of fragmented, illogical tracks run by thesubconscious mind, working from abstract associations and sensory overload. The short films are playful, recycling theaudio they’re built upon in the style of music videos.I’m therefore asking you to “turn your mind off”: disengage from intellect to consider the automated motion of yoursubconscious mind.Whereas culture-jamming often hijacks meme culture, the artist behind BULL is a fan of the aesthetics found in horror filmsand music videos.
