Clara Iza Mercado, Between Breath and Becoming

Between Breath and Becoming is a short experimental film that attempts to reconstruct the sensory and embodied dimensions of near-death experience — not by depicting it through symbolic imagery, but by making the viewer feel something of what it is actually like.

The primary research came from an audio interview with someone who had a near-death experience. The voice was not used as documentary material; instead it was fragmented, stretched, and layered into the sound design. Visually, the film works with extreme close-up footage of material processes: charcoal on paper, fabric in light, water. None of it is symbolic in a conventional sense. The aim was to find a cinematic form that corresponds to what near-death experience feels like — the dissolution of bodily boundaries, the strangeness of time, the sense of being between states — rather than what it looks like in mainstream film.

The film contains no characters, no narrative, and no identifiable locations. It operates through close-up manipulations of material process, processed testimonial audio, and a structure that mirrors the phenomenological arc of the experiences it explores.
