Through “Even the Buildings Grow on Soil”, I wanted to explore what lies at the core of humanity’s problems, more specifically socioenvironmental issues and how I believe the root cause can be found in our understanding and knowledge of ourselves as well as in our relation to nature.
An abundance of modernity, materiality and rationalisation has meant a decline in the spiritual, magic and nostalgia, which I stress has caused us to position ourselves above the natural world as well as promoted individuality and a neglect of our inherent connectedness.
The film explores these themes through asking the question “Where is the line between the natural and the human?”, investigating the materiality of objects as well as repositioning London, or the urban as its own natural ecosystem – similar to Studio Ghibli films that enchant their stories and places with a sense of mysticism, transforming the mundane.
