Ben Lorenz, Even the Buildings Grow on Soil

short filmInstallation

Even the Buildings Grow on Soil delves into the roots of humanity’s socioenvironmental crises. At its heart lies the question: Where is the line between the natural and the human? Accompanied by discussions of organic and inorganic objects, the work repositions the city not as separate from nature, but as its own kind of natural ecosystem — living, breathing and ever-changing.Drawing inspiration from the mysticism and enchantment of Ghibli films, the installation weaves the spiritual, nostalgic and non-material back into spaces more commonly defined by modernity and rationalisation. Challenging the dominance of material abundance, capitalism and individualism, which have distanced us from our inherent connection to the natural world.By transforming the mundane and reframing the urban as an enchanted place, Even the Buildings Grow on Soil invites viewers to reimagine their place in a world where soil and concrete are not opposites, but unified. In doing so, it calls for a quiet revolution — a return to reverence and reciprocity with the living world around us.
