Dan Sue, Begin Again

installation

"Begin Again" is an interactive installation that explores the emotional and spiritual journey of mourning through digital media and memory. Inspired by personal experiences of loss and cultural perspectives on death, this installation invites participants to reflect on the warmth and healing process that can emerge through digital mourning.

Through gesture recognition, the installation guides participants through four stages of mourning—Woven Memory, Loss Realisation, Revival Imagery, and Companionship—offering a softer and more personal approach to grief while digitally reconstructing Bowlby’s (1980) theory of the stages of mourning, corresponding to his four stages, Numbness and Shock, Learning and Searching, Disorganisation and Despair, and Reorganisation.

This project aims to provide a reflective and emotional space for those coping with the complexity of loss, reimagining how digital interactions can create meaningful connections in moments of mourning. Begin Again is not only a memorial, but also about embracing the persistence and transformative possibilities of digital mourning.
