Chuhan Wang, A Day Like This

narrative card game

‘A Day Like This’ is a narrative card game developed using Unreal Engine 5 that explores the dilemmas faced by functionally disabled elderly people who have lost their mobility and the process of self-reconciliation. Players are asked to make a series of daily choices - whether to seek help, or to accomplish everything on your own. Each decision reveals a short narrative sequence that subtly changes the emotional tone.

Rather than focusing on success or failure, the game invites the player to engage in an inner process of self-reconciliation. As the story unfolds, the player feels the cumulative emotions of the small, insignificant things in life, which shape the character's sense of autonomy, dignity, and emotional resilience. There are no goals or punishments in the game, only the experience of living by choice.

‘A Day Like This’ is designed to evoke empathy and reflection, encouraging users to think about what aging and loss of independence means. It's not just about the physical effects, but also about the challenges of self-identity. It provides a contemplative space where players can gently realise that there is meaning even in limitation, and that repetition, even in repetition, can bring about emotional change.
